LOUISE CARPENTER TURNED 95 ON AUGUST 4TH!

Louise will be honored by U.S. Sen. Tim Scott and North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey.

Three days a week — rain, shine or even during a pandemic, the people who rely on the services of Neighbors Together can count on seeing Louise Carpenter’s smiling face. For the past 12 years, this superstar volunteer has poured her time and energy into serving people who are poor and homeless who turn to Neighbors Together for meals, clothing, job training, wellness checks, legal services and housing assistance.

“She is an inspiration to all of us, especially anyone who wants to volunteer,” said Neighbors Together Community Engagement Coordinator Leola McFadden. “Nothing can stop her. During the pandemic she called and called to find out when she could come back to volunteer.”

Louise Is so dedicated to volunteering that she pays a driver three days a week to take her to and from Neighbors Together – an 18-mile roundtrip from her James Island home that she shares with her daughter and son-in-law. Affectionately known as the “Cake Lady,” Louise has served thousands of desserts, made hundreds of salads and prepared countless silverware settings during her volunteer hours.

When asked why she gives so much time, Louise says she likes to stay busy, but more importantly, she enjoys being of service to people who may not have as much as she does. “Louise plays an integral role in what we strive to do for our neighbors,” said Neighbors Together Executive Director Kara Stewart. “She would be  missed if she wasn’t here.”
